An ode to Chicago

Well — it’s official! The Association of Accounting Marketing (newly rebranded to Association for Accounting Growth) is headed to the Windy City! Summit 2027 will happen in Chicago May 17-19.

I couldn’t be more excited to return to a city I know and love! Growing up in Northern Indiana, Chicago was the biggest city within driving distance. I’ve been to many a cool concert in the city (System of a Down, Guns n’ Roses, and Talib Kwali to name a few.) The museum options are robust, the dining is great, and Lake Michigan is a profoundly beautiful sight to behold.

The AAG community is in for a treat at next year’s Summit. Whether you’ll be there for the conference or visiting separately, here’s my list of tips, tricks, and insights on this wonderful metropolis.

Leave the car behind

If you can help it, stick to the trains. I’ve never enjoyed driving in Chicago traffic, and neither will you. It’s a city that’s fairly easy to navigate on public transportation, but take it with a grain of salt. Your mileage may vary!

Take in the architecture

Those who know me know that I appreciate good design. Chicago’s giant buildings and skyscrapers are everything you could ask for. From the incredible heights of Willis Tower (always the Sears Tower in my heart) to the iconic circular towers of Marina City to the cantilevered marvel of 150 North Riverside, the central area dubbed “The Loop” has much to take in.

I have yet to make it to the Chicago Architecture Center (on my bucket list), but I have been on multiple architecture boat tours, which are always led by an amusing and insightful tour guide to give you context and understanding of the stories behind the skyline.

Added bonus — you’ll likely get to check out the infamous site of the Dave Matthews Tour Bus Incident

There’s no shortage of cool places to explore

If you want the classic tourist experience, the Bean (AKA Cloud Gate) at Millennium Park awaits you! Navy Pier is a classic place to wander and eat while overlooking Lake Michigan (and if you time it right, the perfect place to catch the fireworks from!)

Want to check out a great museum? Water Lilies by Monet at the Art Institute of Chicago is just one of many incredible pieces on display. The Shedd Aquarium is a family-friendly experience for all ages in an iconic location right off the lake. The of Museum of Science and Industry has a World War II U-boat and so much more to explore.

One of my favorite things to do in Chicago, time and weather permitting, is rent a bike to ride up and down the shore. The Northerly Island Natural Area has a wonderful trail, giving you a feeling of calm and quiet amidst the bustling city.

Eat, drink, and be merry

There are countless delicious places to check out. One that I recommend to any visitor is a burger from Au Cheval at their OG location (get an egg on top!) or at any of their mini "Small Cheval” locations dotted across the metro. The last time I was in town, we grabbed some delicious breakfast bites at Sweet Bean, a Taiwanese bakery with fresh sweet and savory pastries, buns and rolls, and coffee! Miller's Pub is quintessential Midwest, with hearty food and cold beers.

You might not be able to dine at The Bear, but you’ll have a great time all the same.

Discover Chicago for yourself!

May these tidbits of advice help you as you consider your next adventure. 🤞
